We are now passing Kvitur revealing a beautiful view out over the inner part of Rombaken and further out towards the rolling and magical mountains around Ofotfjord. We take our time through this landscape so you have plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent scenery. Next to the mouth of the Sildvik river you will see Sildvik waterworks blasted into the rock. A steady increase in the demand for power made it necessary to harness the water resources in the area and the waterworks came into operation in 1982. Down towards the fjord a supply quay was built so that the Ofoten line could be equipped with its own storage building and accompanying transport route for necessary supplies. At times logistics proved challenging in this wild terrain especially during the harsh winters. Stone barracks were built for the hard-working railway workers known as Rallar. Not least of these the Rallar cooks, who produced first class catering for the menfolk’s large appetites. At that time there were many men who blew a few kisses in the direction of the cooks in the hope of winning their favour. The food was hearty and often consisted of American pork, salted, dried fish and other such foods which gave the menfolk energy.
