Visit the fascinating Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes, where this remarkable story began. The Hurtigruten ships have been an important mode of transportation and a cultural institution in Norway for more than a century. They have played an important role in connecting the south and north of Norway.
In 1999, the old Express Route ship MS Finnmarken was landed at Hurtigruten Museum at Stokmarknes in Nordland, and today graces the landscape as one of the world's largest museum artefacts. The solution to preserving the monument to Norwegian coastal history is a 3,600 square meter building that encloses the ship, built mainly in steel and glass - more information about the building below.
While visiting the museum, you can explore the history of the Hurtigruten service through a range of exhibits, interactive displays and multimedia presentations. The exhibits cover the early days of the service, its role during the Second World War and its evolution into a modern transportation and tourism enterprise.
A highlight of the museum is visiting the bridge of the MS Finnmarken, a ship dating from 1956 that is now a monument to Norway’s coastal heritage.
You can experience the thrill of navigating the ship on a simulated voyage through the Norwegian fjords.

More information about the building: The shape of the building is inspired by the openings in the ship's side, which tilt forward at both the stern and bow. MS Finnmarken was the first ship with this type of opening, which gave the impression of a fast-moving ship. The design is inspired by this design concept and the concept supports this both in volume and in plan. The existing building together with the protective conservation building at the Hurtigruten Museum will house the exhibition which tells the story of the coastal express line.
